TN colleges to migrate to new system

CHENNAI: Arts and Science colleges and universities across Tamil Nadu are set to migrate to the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) of study from the coming academic year. Besides, the state government has decided to introduce on an experimental basis, the cluster colleges system, in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchi. Also, the grading system will replace the mark-based system in universities in tune with global higher education standards.

The decisions, announced in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday by higher education minister K Ponmudy, are aimed at ensuring student mobility and upgrading higher education to international standards .

The CBCS would help students choose from a variety of job-oriented elective subjects. For instance, a student of B.A History can opt to study Tourism or Communicative English as an elective. The government plans to instruct colleges to uniformly offer 140 credits in undergraduate courses and 90 credits in post-graduate programmes.

Under the cluster colleges concept, the government intends to bring about academic cooperation among a group of colleges in the four cities to enable them share resources and students to study a subject of his choice in any of the colleges, which are part of the cluster. Students who are studying in the cluster colleges can approach the other college through EDUSAT and exchange course materials, library books and journals in e-form. Also, students from one college can attend the classes in another cluster college and share their experience and information.

To enhance the quality of teaching and learning in colleges, the government has made it mandatory for all colleges to obtain accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Also, a state level Quality Assessment Council will be formed to carry out the continuous auditing of quality of all TN colleges.

Developing centres of excellence in universities, encouraging more colleges to apply for autonomy, upgrading curriculum in universities, networking of libraries in universities, mandatory academic audit for colleges and preparing a status report on higher education are also on the anvil .
