TAMBARAM: The State government will soon make it mandatory for all technical institutions, including private, to conduct industrial internship programmes for students, Minister for Higher Education K. Ponmudy said on Monday.

Participating in the 20th Graduates Day function of the B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering College in Vandalur on Monday, the Minister said the internship would be on the lines of house surgeon programme for students of medicine.

A formal announcement from the government in this connection would be made soon. The objective of making the inetrnship compulsory was to improve the skills of students graduating from technical institutions.

The number of self-financing colleges had increased tremendously. Around 108 applications for starting new institutions in Tamil Nadu from the academic year 2008 – 09 were pending with the All India Council for Technical Education, Mr. Ponmudy said.

Lauding the administration of Crescent Engineering College for producing several rank holders of Anna University, the Minister said the institution was eligible for the status of a Deemed University. He appealed to both men and women graduates to encourage and support each other in the development of their careers.
