UGC meet to discuss crucial issues
Madurai: A meeting of all stakeholders in higher education,
including Vice-Chancellors of universities in the country, is
to take place in New Delhi for two days starting on October
10.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is organising the meet
to discuss crucial issues pertaining to higher education particularly
on how to increase students’ enrolment in varsities and
colleges, according to G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar
University.
Talking to The Hindu here on Saturday, he said that the discussion
agenda included policies and strategies, allocation of funds,
quality of education and priorities to be followed by institutions.
Concrete steps
“The meeting is likely to come out with some concrete
steps on how to get more students for higher education. Right
now, only around seven per cent of our students opt for college
education but the target is to make it 20 per cent,” Dr.
Thiruvasagam said.
Apart from enrolment, the meeting will also look into Eleventh
Plan allocation.
The Union Human Resources Development Minister, Arjun Singh,
will inaugurate the conference while Kapil Sibal, Union Minister
of Science and Technology, will address the valedictory session.
The Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, P. Maruthamuthu,
said that various committees that were formed by the UGC on
higher education issues would submit their recommendations at
this meet.
He said that zonal level meeting of VCs would also take place.
