File response to CET pleas by Friday, court tells State

Students, parents awaiting outcome of litigation: counsel
  • The Government is delaying the filing of its counter, says counsel
  • Counsel for DK allowed to file a petition on behalf of president K. Veeramani to implead him as party
Chennai: The Madras High Court has asked the Tamil Nadu Government to file its response to public interest litigation petitions questioning the decision to abolish common entrance test (CET) for admission to professional courses this year, by Friday.

The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice D. Murugesan, gave an oral direction to this effect on Thursday, when senior counsel K.M. Vijayan mentioned the matter.

Mr. Vijayan said the Government was delaying the filing of its counter to the PILs. A large number of students and parents were anxiously awaiting the outcome of the litigation.

When a Government advocate informed the Bench that the counter-affidavit was ready, the Judges said it should then be filed by Friday. Further hearing on the matter was then adjourned to April 4.

The plea
The petitioners, maintaining that the State lacked legislative competence to enact the Tamil Nadu Admission in Professional Institution Education Act 2006, sought a direction to the Government to issue application forms and conduct admission process for the academic year 2007-08 by conducting the CET.

They also wanted the court to restrain the Government from selecting or admitting students to professional colleges without conducting a CET to determine the inter se merit of all Board students.

Permission for PMK too
On Thursday, the Bench also permitted A. Veerasekaran, counsel for the Dravidar Kazhagam, to file a petition on behalf of DK president K. Veeramani to implead him as party to the proceedings.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) too has obtained permission to file an implead petition in the matter, said its counsel K. Balu.
