Coimbatore: Scientific knowledge has been generated by the efforts of many scientists over a period of time. This is the information students are getting through their textbooks. Now, it is the duty of youth to improve upon this knowledge and contribute to the development of science, Godfrey Louis, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi, said here on Saturday.
Delivering the graduation day address at the Nehru Arts and Science College, he lamented that many students who were interested in pure sciences, were often forced to take up engineering or technology courses.

“There is a changing scenario in higher education. Developments are taking place in science, arts and humanities. The task of universities and institutions of higher learning is to impart these latest developments to students. A great amount of pedagogical research is required for framing syllabus based on the new developments,” Mr. Louis said.

B. Ilango, former Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University, said, with the dilution of standard of education, there was also a dilution in the merit of degrees awarded by institutions.

Lamenting that most of the colleges were unable to place even 10 per cent of their students, he pointed out that though many companies required quite a sizeable quantity of manpower, they would rather go without personnel than settle for incompetent people.

“There are a lot of jobs. The employment scenario in Information Technology is very bright. There are Special Economic Zones and IT Parks coming up in various places like Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi, Salem and Hosur. The one at Shollinganallur in Chennai taking off next month on 377 acres with infrastructure worth Rs. 40 crore will give direct employment to one lakh people and indirect employment to two lakh. It has been estimated that the Business Process Outsourcing industry alone will require 27,000 people this year,” Mr. Ilango said.

However, he said students should equip themselves with subject skills and communication skills if they had to bag these jobs. This could be possible only if they went to the right institutions, he added. “Don't pursue education in unworthy institutions and waste your time,” Mr. Ilango said.
