Engineering course approval deadline put off again
Third extension by AICTE in less than a Month
Chennai: For the third time in less than a month, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has extended the deadline for engineering colleges in the country to apply for extension of approval of existing courses for the coming academic year. This has thrown the schedule for the approval process haywire yet again.
“Last date for applying, uploading documents on web portal and submission of hard copy to respective regional office of the council for extension of approval of existing courses along with application for increase in intake, closure, persons of Indian origin and non-resident Indians for academic year 2010-11 is extended up to March 31,” the AICTE announced on Thursday.
As it is many self-financing engineering colleges in the country have been reluctant to file online applications for extension of approval under the new regulations, which were unveiled amidst much fanfare by union human resources development minister Kapil Sibal a couple of months ago. The revised regulations seek to make the approval and inspection process foolproof in terms of compliance on academic matters by mandating colleges to furnish details of faculty with photographs and biometric fingerprints.
In Tamil Nadu, the Consortium of Self-Financing Professional, Arts and Science Colleges and two others had obtained an interim stay from the Madras high court on implementing the new regulations. The case is coming up for hearing on Friday.
“Originally, the AICTE had fixed February 20 as the deadline for submitting online applications, which was extended to February 28. On February 23 this got extended to March 15 and now they have revised it to this month-end. On the other hand, managements of self-financing engineering colleges have appealed to keep the new regulations in abeyances. We need to wait and see if the government would be able to implement the revised regulations strictly in letter and spirit,” an academic said.
As per the earlier schedule, the AICTE’s expert committee teams were slated to visit the colleges and inspect their academic and infrastructural facilities from March 10 to April 12 for granting extension of approval and introduction of new courses. The respective affiliating universities in each state were mandated to submit their findings and views to the AICTE’s regional offices by March 31. “All this would be rescheduled now and fresh dates will be declared,” an AICTE official said.
