Common University Act to come up in Budget session
Madurai: The Bill to introduce the Common University Act will
be placed in the budget session of the Assembly, and the Department
of Higher Education is giving ‘finishing touches’
to it.
Before it reaches the Assembly, the draft contents of the Bill
will be posted on the website of the Tamil Nadu State Council
for Higher Education (TANSCHE) to seek public opinion and suggestions
from academics and teachers.
A. Ramasamy, vice-chairman, TANSCHE, told The Hindu on Sunday
that the draft Bill has been sent to the Law Department for
clearance.
“The Common University Act is aimed at bringing uniformity
in the administration of all universities. We will keep the
draft contents in public domain and call for representations
from stakeholders,” he said.
He said there was a need for uniformity because universities
had different methods of administration, and the procedures
for staff recruitment were also different. Changing the tenure
of Vice-Chancellors from the present three years to either a
four-year term or two terms of three years each was under consideration.
The Department would consider all representations before going
ahead with the Bill, he said. Discussions had been going on
for the past two years.
