VC justifies award of Ph.D. degree
Tirunelveli: Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University
R.T. Sabapathy Mohan has made it clear that Ph.D. Degree in
Coastal Aquaculture was awarded to M. Brintha as she had done
her research only in that field and even she had mentioned in
the application form for Ph.D. as ‘Interdisciplinary’
and had not mentioned the ‘Interdisciplinary Subjects’
in the application.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday evening, Dr. Sabapathy Mohan
said the subject area mentioned by Ms. Brintha in her application
form was Coastal Aquaculture when she registered for research
in August 1999.
“Normally, any candidate will be allowed to register under
a guide of his/her discipline and in such case, the Ph.D. degree
will be awarded in that discipline. Further, a candidate will
be allowed to do Ph.D. under interdisciplinary category whenever
the disciplines of the candidate and the guide are different.
The Ph.D. degree for interdisciplinary scholars will be awarded
by mentioning the qualifying discipline of the candidate and
the other discipline will figure within the parenthesis with
the word ‘Interdisciplinary”, Dr. Sabapthy Mohan
noted.
Justifying the awarding of Ph.D. degree in Coastal Aquaculture
to Ms. Brintha, the Vice-Chancellor said the student was awarded
in the subject as mentioned in the Ph.D. application and in
all other documents.
At the time of submission of synopsis, former Vice-Chancellor
had approved the Subject Experts and subject of research as
‘Coastal Aquaculture’. Among the panel of examiners
who evaluated the thesis, two of them are experts in aquaculture
and third examiner in Zoology. In the past nine years all the
communications by the guide and the co-guide indicated that
the candidate was working for the requirements of Doctoral of
Philosophy in Coastal Aquaculture.
“In the light of the above facts supported by available
documents and due adherence of available university regulations,
the scholar was issued the degree in the discipline of Coastal
Aquaculture. If she requests, we can give the Ph.D. Degree as
Zoology – Coastal Aquaculture (Interdisciplinary),”
Dr. Sabapathy Mohan said.
