“Globalisation should serve human interest”
16th convocation at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University
Congratulations: Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor and Chancellor
of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, giving away the degree
certificate to a student at the convocation held in Tirunelveli
on Tuesday.
Tirunelveli: Since the impact of globalisation has been, and
continues to be, unequal and humanity is at crossroads owing
to this universal phenomenon, it is the responsibility of every
one concerned to see that globalisation serves human interest
and is beneficial to all, S. Bhaskaran, Member Secretary, Tamil
Nadu State Council for Higher Education, has observed.
Delivering the 16th convocation address at Manonmaniam Sundaranar
University on Tuesday, Dr. Bhaskaran said science and technology
had come together to occupy the life of a common man of present
era, which was being constituted by forces of globalisation,
growth of knowledge societies and rapidly occurring revolutions
in science as well as in the society.
But it was more important to highlight the ways in which
science could help in developing and promoting the human dimension
of man and the environment.
“Those who suffer from globalisation are the poor, women,
ethnic minorities and the youth, who are already struggling
with exclusion. Whether we like it or not, globalisation has
come to stay. The only onerous option left to us is to master
the art and acquire the skills for harnessing the forces of
globalisation to the wellbeing of the humanity,” Dr. Bhaskaran
noted.
While appealing to the young graduates to remove the social
paradoxes and inequality, induced by globalisation, by choosing
the path of righteousness, careful planning and preparation,
he appealed to them to perform their duty first before claiming
their rights.
Of the 122 gold medallists, 104 were women.
While highlighting the university’s achievements during
the past one year, Vice-Chancellor R.T. Sabapathy Mohan said
the university had introduced Choice Based Credit System with
the objective of preparing competent students to take up greater
challenges.
He also informed that MSU, which introduced M.Sc. Marine
Science and Ocean Management, M.Sc. Nano Biotechnology and
M.Tech. Nano Biotechnology recently, was planning to launch
a few more courses including B.Ed. through distance education.
