Madurai Kamaraj University’s 42nd convocation to be held
today
Madurai: The 42nd annual convocation of the Madurai Kamaraj
University will be held on Wednesday with over 37,000 students
set to get their degrees.
“One of the salient features of this year’s convocation
is that 177 candidates would be getting their Ph.D. degrees.
This is a significant research contribution of the university,”
Vice-Chancellor, R. Karpaga Kumaravel, said while addressing
a press conference here on Tuesday.
Also, 693 research scholars had registered in the last one year
for Ph.D. programmes with 440 being part-time and the rest full
time.
Another achievement was that 74 candidates had won prizes and
medals from various endowments for their academic achievement.
Girls constituted 72 per cent (53) of these winners. In addition,
37,000 candidates would be getting their degrees in absentia.
Speaking about the varsity’s achievements in the past
one year, he said that all the colleges affiliated to the varsity
had successfully implemented the choice-based credit system.
“Forty six boards sat together and formed the 3,000-page
CBCS curriculum for 92 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
in 50 days,” he said.
Further, the varsity’s School of Biological Sciences had
embarked on a networking project with a Rs.10 crore funding
from the University Grants Commission. Overall, he said, the
varsity had obtained Rs.16.30 crore in funding from various
agencies for research activities,
23 research projects
Under the University with Potential for Excellence, 23 research
projects were on in the fields of Nanotechnology and Biosciences
and another 22 on Holistic Development, Dr. Karpaga Kumaravel
said.
The university was also strengthening its infrastructure.
A video conferencing facility and “smart classrooms”
were introduced towards this objective.
University Grants Commission, Vice-Chairperson, Mool Chand Sharma,
would be delivering the Convocation address. Governor Surjit
Singh Barnala, who is the Chancellor of the varsity, and Higher
Education Minister K. Ponmudy, who is the university’s
pro-Chancellor, would also be participating.
