Exhibition of medical books under way

Chennai: For the medical student, this could be the ultimate stopover in their quest for knowledge.

An exhibition of medical books that began at the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University on Monday features more than one lakh titles, with a combined value estimated to be Rs. 10 crore.

About 12 publishers are participating in the 13th edition of the exhibition.

The exhibition, which is open from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., will conclude on November 15. Inaugurating the event, Vice-Chancellor K. Meer Mustafa Hussain said the exhibition would be useful for students, faculty and practitioners.

Library accredited
Meanwhile, the university library has been accredited as a regional medical library for south India by the Union Ministry of Health. The library, which does not have a holiday throughout the year, has a collection of 27,500 books, 170 international journals and 20,000 dissertations.

The library’s 1,400 life members and 4,600 annual members include health science professionals, faculties, research scholars and students of affiliated colleges.

The university established a digital library in 2002 and upgraded it as a virtual library in 2005.

The university has also established a virtual library consortium to disseminate e-resources for the benefit of 288 medical and paramedical affiliate institutions. From December, the university plans to allow users to access e-journals through the website www.tnmmu.ac.in
