University plans networking of libraries
TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University is planning to create the
‘Bharathi Library Network’ (Bharathi LIBNET) during
the XI Plan Period by networking libraries of its departments,
schools, centres and affiliated colleges.
Networking knowledge resources in the region by adopting international
standards; supporting teaching, learning and research outcomes,
and adopting newer and innovative technologies in processing
and dissemination of information constitute the nucleus of the
mission of the university’s Department of Library and
Information Science.
Such a networking will facilitate access to library catalogues
through web for sharing of bibliographic records in a common
format, according to Srinivasa Ragavan, Librarian and Department
Head In-Charge.
While creating a platform for optimum utilisation of resources,
the project, he said, will help the participating libraries
to save cost and manpower in the process of accessing information.
In the second phase of the project, the participating libraries
will be enabled to have a consortia based subscription, collection,
development and delivery of information products, and services
and information, he said.
The university library also has plans to implement RFID (Radio
Frequency Identification) Technology from the next academic
year for better streamlining of users entry, circulation, stock
verification and stock rectification.
And the DSpace@bdulib Repository will collect, preserve and
disseminate the research output of the faculty, scholars and
students of Bharathidasan University in digital format.
