Job fairs for government arts colleges planned
- Polytechnic, colleges to be clubbed to enhance job prospects
- Vice-Chancellors and Principals asked to give feedback on the CBCS
Madurai: The State government has decided to conduct job fairs
for students of government arts colleges.
As a first step, four centres have been identified by the Department
of Collegiate Education to conduct the fairs in Coimbatore,
Salem, Madurai and Tiruchi, says Secretary for Higher Education
K. Ganesan.
Speaking to The Hindu here on Thursday, Mr. Ganesan said the
placement cell of the Directorate of Collegiate Education was
taking steps to usher in a ‘job fair culture’ in
government arts and science colleges.
“Slowly it is picking up. We have organised job fairs
in two government colleges at Nandanam and Vyasarpadi in Chennai.
The focus now is to take it to other centres for the benefit
of graduates in other parts of the State.”
He said the Higher Education Department was planning to bring
polytechnic and arts colleges together to enhance job prospects
for graduates.
“It will be a sort of value-addition for undergraduate
students. A student of an arts college should be able to pursue
a certificate course in a polytechnic college if this arrangement
works out.” The plan is to attach government colleges
with the nearest polytechnic institutes. Aided colleges could
try out the model later.
“We want vocationalisation of higher education to happen
because the employment survey conducted by the Confederation
of Indian Industry says 70 per cent of arts college students
are finding it difficult to get jobs within one year of completing
their courses,” Mr. Ganesan said.
To set right the inadequacies in the implementation of the Choice
Based Credit System, the government has asked Vice-Chancellors,
Principals and faculty to give their feedback.
“Colleges can individually apply to the Directorate of
Collegiate Education, explaining the hardships they face. We
will rectify them,” he said.
