University diploma in treating dyslexia
Chennai: Promoted as a first for the country, the Tamil Nadu
Dr MGR Medical University has introduced a one-year PG diploma
course in learning disability among children (dyslexia).
According to clinical neuropsychologist B S Virudhagirinathan
, who is a faculty member for the course, "The programme
aims to target women, especially mothers of dyslexic children,
in an attempt to increase their awareness and possibly make
them self-employed . There are a lot of short-term unofficial
courses being offered but this is the first time a medical university
is doing so."
Divided into two semesters, the course will comprise four theory
papers on psychology, clinical aspects of a child's development,
history of learning disability and remedial measure . Students
will have to work with two case studies and also complete a
dissertation (project work), he said.
Interested candidates can send in their applications by October
24 as the authorities are looking to begin the course by November
