Convocation rules relaxed for foreign students
Madurai: Foreign students studying in Indian universities need
no longer wait for the convocation to receive their degrees.
The University Grants Commission has written to the Vice-Chancellors,
asking them to expedite the award of degrees to foreign students
immediately after the results are declared.
Higher education sources told The Hindu here on Sunday that
the UGC had sent guidelines for implementing the scheme for
foreign students, who otherwise had to wait till the convocation
to get their degrees.
According to the communication, universities can make quick
arrangements to award degrees to foreign students so that they
can jump into a career without any waiting period. Universities
that have foreign students on their campuses have welcomed the
decision. They will submit the matter to the Syndicate.
Officials of Madurai Kamaraj University say the decision will
hugely benefit foreign students. The usual procedure is that
the convocation is held every year after the Chancellor’s
assent for a date is obtained, says S. Shanmugiah, Controller
of Examinations, Madurai Kamaraj University.
“In some universities, there will be a long gap between
the publication of results and the convocation, forcing the
foreign students to wait. Now, we will place this matter at
the next Syndicate meeting,” says G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor
of Bharathiar University.
According to Dr. Thiruvasagam, several Chinese students of Bharathiar
University will gain from the decision.
