MKU convocation on November 12
Rs.19 lakh to be spent for green campus initiative, says Vice-Chancellor
Madurai: The 42nd annual convocation of Madurai Kamaraj University
(MKU) will take place here on November 12 with the Vice-Chairman
of University Grants Commission, Mool Chand Sharma, as chief
guest.
He will deliver the convocation address and award degrees/medals
to candidates, R. Karpaga Kumaravel, MKU Vice-Chancellor, said
after the Syndicate meeting held on Sunday.
The Syndicate members discussed arrangements to be made for
the convocation and the visit of Governor/Chancellor Surjit
Singh Barnala who would chair the convocation ceremony.
Dr. Karapaga Kumaravel told The Hindu that the varsity is not
conferring honorary doctorate (Honoris Causa) on any individual
this year “because the university wants to identify really
deserving persons through an objective assessment.”
He said that the varsity would invite applications through the
media and web site based on which a specially constituted committee
will select a couple of individuals for conferring honorary
doctorate.
An important resolution passed at the Syndicate, according to
the Vice-Chancellor, was with regard to increasing the green
cover in the university campus by planting more saplings and
laying lawns.
“We will spend Rs.19 lakh for this green campus initiative
which will be carried out in association with the Tamil Nadu
Agricultural University (TNAU). Our objective is to improve
the ambience of the university campus,” Dr. Karpaga Kumaravel
said.
The TNAU will execute the project through its horticulture experts
and will also be involved in maintenance of greenery.
