Achiever '08, a litmus test for college students

An inter-collegiate skill testing event

Tiruchi: It might be perhaps your academic scores that will help you get a spot in the job arena. But skills like leadership, group dynamics and adaptability matter the most to sustain and succeed in the profession.

Rotary Club of Tiruchi Midtown provided a litmus test to the college students to help them rate their skills at Achiever ’08, an inter-collegiate skill-testing event. First assessment was in the lines of the popular ‘Are you smarter than a fifth grader,’ a talent hunt show of Star World. For a change though, 71 students from 21 colleges were tested on their 10th grade general knowledge and logical reasoning.

‘Off the cuff,’ an extempore that assessed the communication ability of the students, followed the written test. Twenty-four top performers were selected for the second round, which was held on Sunday at Hotel Royal Southern.

They were given a list of self-assessment questions. While posers like ‘who is your role model?” seemed a cakewalk for the students, catch lurked in questions like ‘give us three reasons why you should be hired by a company’ and ‘do you believe in freedom and what it means to you?’

Filled-in profiles were passed on to the four-member panellists of interview, who grilled the students on their reasoning abilities. The participants were split into four groups, named after various Indian achievers. The groups picked up two topics related to burning issues and the students spoke for and against each topic at ‘Hard talk.’ ‘Catch 22,’ a management game, tested the skills of students on situation analysis and creative thinking.

Other events like ‘Broken Square,’ a management game to gauge the team building attitude of the participants and ‘Fried Beans,’ a quiz programme, weighed up their all-round skills. By topping in all events with good number of points, Dheer Vora, a student of National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi, was adjudged as Mr. Achiever ’08 and Angelin Ezhilan from Saranathan College of Engineering as Ms. Achiever ’08. Mr. Vora will take part in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp to be held at Kodaikanal this month end.

District Governor 3000 P. Dhamodharan inaugurated the event and District Governor, 2010-2011, T. Valliappan distributed prizes to the winners. President of the club N.B. Khannan Ayyar and Chairman of ‘Achiever’ K. Panneerselvan spoke.
