Saveetha Medical College inaugurated
Chennai: There is need for more doctors, nurses, health workers
and hospitals if the benefits of science, especially medical science,
should reach villages and the poor in rural areas, said Governor Surjit Singh Barnala.
Inaugurating Saveetha Medical College at Thandalam, near here, on Thursday,
he cited World Health Organisation data that the country had only six doctors
and seven hospitals per 10,000 population.
“The onerous responsibility of creating a healthy society rests in the hands of doctors,” he added.
Preventive and social medicine
Exposing medical students to principles and practice of preventive
and social medicine from the pre-clinical period and providing
community-oriented field based programmes and participatory
education were necessary, he said.
Congratulating Saveetha Institute of Medical and Education Trust’s efforts
in promoting education and research in the fields of medicine, dentistry,
engineering and technology, Mr.Barnala urged medical institutions to offer
an integrated curriculum that would provide a meaningful learning experience
with holistic approach towards patients and their problems.
Saveetha University Chancellor N. Veeraiyan said that the college
would admit 150 students. The central library would have 4,000 books
and 25 journals and virtual library with broadband wi-fi internet
facility have been provided, he said.
