Varsity’s gesture to retired teachers
Physical education offers yet another avenue for higher studies after Plus-Two

The first line that is a proverb was perhaps made richer by the addition of the second line by Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth (1767–1849).
Be that as it may, sport and games have a significant role in moulding one’s personality. The primary function of sport which embraces a variety of activities for the promotion of physical fitness appears to have been relegated to the background ; many games have turned out to be sources for mass entertainment and consequently, money spinners. Every educational institution worth its name will have a unit of physical education. Qualified umpires, referees and other officials are essential for the conduct of competitions. Noted sportspersons are given preference in appointments in government and various public as well as private sector organisations. All these point to the enormous opportunities offered to those who opt for the profession of physical education.
The world of sport offers professional opportunities in different segments.
1) Sport as a career as in the case of a tennis professional or a cricketer
2) Training and coaching
3) Sport organisations, management, journalism, photography or medicine
Let us focus on the area of physical education that takes you to the professions of teachers, trainers or instructors. The University Grants Commission has taken physical education as a faculty similar to mathematics, English or economics. There are specific qualifications prescribed for the posts of teachers in physical education in schools and colleges. There are certificate, diploma, graduate and postgraduate courses. Qualifications in sport coaching fall into another category.
Physical education teachers in schools and colleges give guidance and leadership to students in the areas of games such as football, volleyball, basket ball, cricket, and tennis as well as in athletics that cover track and field events. They also give coaching to a limited extent. Coaching for competition at the highest levels is a highly specialised area. An expert coach would normally handle only one game or athletics. Great athletes and sportspersons are moulded by specialist coaches who offer dedicated service to trainees in perfecting their skills through appropriate movements of the body, physical conditioning, scientific drill and specific strategies for the game or sport concerned.
Personal attributes
Anyone opting to work in this area should have sound health; boundless energy and enthusiasm; and ability to work in a team set up. There cannot be any compromise in the matter of physical fitness.
Facing failure with a smile is a quality to those who take part in sport competitions and those who guide others in participating in tournaments and other competitions. “To win the game is great. To play the game is greater. But to love the game is the greatest of all,” is a great motto for any sportsperson. Those who reach high professional positions should have fine communication skills.
Institutions
SAI (Sports Authority of India) is the apex body which encourages and promotes excellence in sport at the national level. It has diverse schemes to meet its objectives. It spots and nurtures talented sports persons. The National Institute of Sports, Patiala and the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, Thiruvananthapuram are part of SAI.
Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala (popularly known as NIS Patiala) is considered as the Mecca of Indian sport.
It has produced coaches of high calibre and significantly contributed in rendering their expertise and assistance in the preparation of the national teams for various international competitions. The institute which works under the control of SAI conducts the following courses also.

Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNCPE ), Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh – 474 002 (Deemed University)
This institution conducts B.P.Ed. (Bachelor of Physical Education), M.P.Ed., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes.

This institution conducts Bachelor of physical education (BPE) – 3 years; Master of physical education (MPE) – 2 years; post graduate diploma in health and fitness management – 1 year.
In order to appreciate the concept of academic courses in physical education, let us look at the details of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in LNCPE.
BPE
The candidates should have passed Plus Two or S.S.L.C. and two-year certificate in physical education and should be between 17 and 21 years of age, with relaxation in the upper age for those who have participated in certain specific competitions.
As part of the selection process, the candidate should prove proficiency in the prescribed tests.
A. Physical fitness test: AAHPER youth fitness test comprising the following items to assess physical fitness.
1. Pull-ups for boys and flexed-arm hang for girls
2. Flexed-leg sit-ups for one minute
3. Shuttle run (30ftx4)
4. Standing broad jump
5. 50-yard dash
6. 600-yard run
Those who fail to secure 50 per cent of the composite score of 60 points of this qualifying test will not be eligible for further testing.
B. Academic test: Test in general knowledge and English
Candidates who secure less than 40 per cent marks will not be eligible for further testing.
C. Game or sport playing ability test:
Each candidate will be required to choose one game or sport, out of the games or sports included in the schedule of International Olympic Association (IOA) or Association of Indian Universities, Sports Division, for assessment. Candidates must secure a minimum of 50 per cent marks in this test.
The merit for admission shall be reckoned on the basis of total marks obtained by a candidate in tests B and C subject to a minimum of 50 per cent of the combined total.
MPE
The eligibility is a Bachelor’s degree in physical education with at least 50 per cent aggregate marks or a Bachelor’s degree with diploma in physical education (D.P.Ed.) of at least one year duration with 50 per cent aggregate marks.
Admission test
A. Written test:
A written test of two hours duration to assess general knowledge, general mental ability and theoretical knowledge in the subjects studied at B.P.E. level. Should score at least 40 per cent marks.
B. Physical fitness test: AAHPER youth fitness test with the elements noted under B.P.E. above. Those who fail to secure at least 50 per cent of the composite score of 60 points of this qualifying test will not be eligible for further testing.
C. Test in one game or sport: Each candidate will be required to choose one game or sport, out of the games or sports included in the schedule of International Olympic Association (IOA) or Association of Indian Universities, Sports Division, for assessment. A candidate should obtain at least 50 per cent of the total marks to be eligible for admission.
There are universities and colleges that run 3-year B.P.E. for those who have passed the Plus Two examination and one year B.P.E. for graduates.
