The reservation arithmetic in MBBS admission

news img

Arriving at the right number of seats each community will stand to gain in the MBBS admissions this year is a case of simple arithmetic governed by the rule of reservation practised in Tamil Nadu.

Traditionally, Tamil Nadu allots 31 per cent to students coming in through the Open Competition category. Thirty per cent of the seats go to the Backward Classes, generally.

But this year, thanks to reservation for Backward Class Muslims and Christians (at 3.5 per cent each), the quota for the BC category is 23 per cent.

Most Backward Classes continue to get 20 per cent, Scheduled Castes 18 per cent and Scheduled Tribes one per cent.

The cut-off marks will also go up by 0.5 points this year, compared to last year.
