University decides to reduce fee
For Instant Examination from Rs.900 to Rs. 500
Tiruchi: Bharathidasan University has decided to reduce the
fee for Instant Examination from Rs. 900 to Rs. 500.
Hitherto, the Instant examination was meant only for those students
who had failed in a single subject in the final semester. Henceforth,
students who had not got through in one subject in any other
semester can also apply. The Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko
made these announcements at the meeting of the Senate responding
to a member K. Mani’s contention that the high fee structure
affected poor students.
Many members wanted the university to invigorate the functioning
of its Examination Wing and rectify shortcomings in the interests
of the student community. The Vice-Chancellor replied that a
three-member committee has been formed to look into the requirements
of the office of the Controller of Examinations. The committee
will study the need for more Deputy and Assistant Controllers
and additional sections in order to ensure prompt functioning,
Prof. Ponnavaikko said.
Likewise, the university will examine the deficiencies in its
Centre for Distance Education and streamline administration.
Responding to complaints of nepotism, he assured that the lapses,
if any, in the appointment of teachers in constituent colleges
would be rectified in right earnest. Shortcomings in the presentation
of audit report would also be looked into, he said, to a point
raised by P.M. Mansure, Senate Member.
Syndicate Member Ganesan presented a surplus of Rs. 154.37 crore
in the annual budget for 2005-06. With an opening balance of
Rs. 137.28 crore, the income and expenditure of the university
during the year was Rs. 128.99 crore and Rs. 111.90 crore respectively.
J.P. Jayakumar, Member, wanted the university to be serious
about addressing audit objections, and emphasised that a meaningful
discussion on the budget will be possible only if it is presented
within a year. Prof. Ponnavaikko acknowledged the need for setting
right audit objections then and there to prevent accumulation.
He said that the proposed District Counselling and Career Development
Cell would be established in phases in all the eight districts
in the university jurisdiction. One such facility would come
up by the end of this year in one of the districts with funds
received from the University Grants Commission and the State
Government. The report on the educational status of different
age groups of students in these districts has been prepared
and would be submitted to the UGC in a month’s time, he
said.
The university was waiting for a government order with regard
to the public wish for an arts and science college in Lalgudi.
The initial formalities have been completed and once the order
is received, it will be known whether it would be a Government
College or a constituent college of the university, he said.
Prof. Ponnavaikko listed the achievements made by various departments
and faculties.
