Job fair inaugurated

Chennai: The University of Madras campus presented a carnival atmosphere as youngsters thronged the venue for a two-day job fair that was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran on Saturday. The fair is open to students from across the State, he said.

Thousands of young men and women lined up to register, fill in forms, take tests and attend interviews on the premises. Seventeen companies including ICICI, Airtel, Perot Systems, HCL, and Allsec Technologies had sent in recruiters who conducted the tests and interviews.

Around 5,000 candidates had registered online until noon on Saturday. Those who had registered also took the online Techruit test conducted for the registered candidates. About 100 counsellors conducted sessions for the 2,000 vacancies.

Some companies were also seeking marine engineers. A group of youths who had come from Madurai were keen on applying for jobs in their core field, engineering. The students of Mohamed Sathak Engineering College in Madurai, G. Karthikeyan and S. Gopalakrishnan, who learnt of the fair from friends, had come to try their luck.

“I am confident that I will get a job today,” said Mr. Gopalakrishnan. The friends had lost out on campus interview in their college as they were out on project work, they said.
