Exclusive varsity to regulate B.Ed. colleges

Ramanathapuram/Madurai: An exclusive university for teacher education, set up by the State government in Chennai to monitor/regulate B. Ed. Colleges, will come into existence on July 1.

Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Education University will function from the campus of Lady Wellington College, Chennai.

It is being established to streamline mushrooming teacher training institutions and bring all B. Ed. colleges under its fold, official sources told The Hindu on Friday. The move would not only facilitate the government’s intention to bring all institutions under one umbrella but also improve the quality of teacher education.

Affiliation process
Giving more details, Secretary for Higher Education K. Ganesan, when contacted, said all existing B. Ed. colleges in the State would now be “transferred/affiliated” to the new university. It would look into the process of affiliation of new teacher training institutions.

He said at present each university had its own schedule of admissions and examinations, which made it difficult to bring uniformity among institutions offering B. Ed. course.

According to officials, there are 268 Teacher Training Institutes in the State approved by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE), New Delhi.

“When each university has its own time schedule, it causes certain delays for candidates. Delays have to be avoided as teachers’ recruitment is based on seniority in employment exchange,” the Higher Education Secretary said.

Vice-Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, A. Ramasamy, said the State Government had come out with Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Education University Act 2008 and issued it in the gazette.
