50% more seats in PG courses this year
Chennai : The University of Madras has decided to permit its
affiliated arts and science colleges to increase students' intake
in postgraduate programmes by 50% this year. However, the intake
in MBA and MCA would not be increased as these courses are governed
by the regulations of the All India Council for Technical Education
(AICTE).
Addressing members of the university's senate at a special sitting
here, vice chancellor S Ramachandran said "From this year
the arts and science colleges can create additional seats in
postgraduate courses to the extent of 50% of its sanctioned
students' intake in each course." The senate members hailed
the initiative.
Later interacting with journalists, the vice chancellor said,
"Presently we have around 13,000 postgraduate students
in our affiliated arts and science colleges. A significant number
of them are doing MBA and MCA but the intake in these courses
cannot be increased without obtaining the approval from the
AICTE."
According to him, the move will ensure that at least 2,000 more
seats are added in PG courses in 2008. "Because the colleges
will increase seats only in courses that are popular,"
he said. As per prevailing norms, each college can admit a maximum
of 20 students in a PG course. With the flexibility to add 50%
seats, the number will now go up to 30.
In addition to these, the university is also increasing the
students' intake to courses offered by its departments by 500
this year.
Purnima Muralidharan, who wants to pursue an MA in Human Resource
Management at the Madras School of Social Work, said "The
University of Madras offers a variety of courses and programmes.
Since there is a reservation quota system in place, it is a
little difficult for students to get admission for the courses
they want under the open competition. Increasing the number
of seats will give them a fair chance."
