BU to tie-up with Singapore university

A team from BU to visit Singapore in August
  • National University of Singapore is ranked No. 33 in the world
  • Exchange programme for students on a sharing basis by both universities is being worked out
Coimbatore: Bharathiar University will tie-up with the National University of Singapore (NUS) for research in basic sciences.

Vice-Chancellor of the university G. Thiruvasagam told The Hindu that the university has been selected based on its strength in the basic sciences departments.

B.V.R. Chowdari, Executive Director, Indian Universities Research Initiative, of the NUS, visited the Bharathiar University and invited the Vice-Chancellor to visit NUS to inspect the facilities there, before they came to an understanding.

“The NUS is ranked No. 33 in the world. It has tie-ups with many renowned universities. In India, it has tie-ups only with the Indian Institutes of Kanpur and Madras, and University of Hyderabad. Now they have selected Bharathiar University. The tie-up will explore the possibility of offering joint Ph.D. programmes, exchange of students and faculty, besides others,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

He would go with a team of faculty from various departments to NUS to identify the areas of interest.

“We would also like to explore possibilities in joint programmes in social sciences, bio-technology and nano-technology. Dual degree programmes for post-graduates, that can be studied partially here and at Singapore will also be worked out,” he added.

Exchange programmes for students on a sharing basis by both the universities would be worked out, according to Mr. Chowdari.

The team from Bharathiar University would visit NUS in the first week of August to finalise the details and sign a memorandum of understanding.
