Heavy rush for admission to colleges

Thousands of applications have been sold
  • Last date to receive application forms is June 3
  • Counselling likely to take place during June second week
Madurai: Government arts colleges in Madurai, Melur and Karaikudi are seeing unprecedented rush for admissions this academic year beating the figures of last year.

Thousands of applications have already been sold in each college ever since the Plus Two marks statements were issued last week.

In great demand
The two undergraduate courses that are in great demand in these government colleges are B. Sc (Computer Science) and B. Com., officials in the Collegiate Education Department here said on Tuesday.

For instance, more than 1,000 applications were already issued for just 120 B.Com. seats in the Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women in the city.

V. Swaminathan, Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education, said that over 6,000 forms were sold in Meenakshi College alone till date while 1,000 applications were bought by students at the Government Arts College in Melur near here.

The last date for issuing and receiving filled in application forms is June 3 after which admission counselling is likely to take place during June second week.

“This trend indicates that there is a good public patronage for Government institutions also. Perhaps, schemes like no tuition fees and free bus pass are attracting more students,” he said.

For 50 seats in B. Sc (computer science) course at Meenakshi College, the forms issued till Tuesday afternoon were 603.

Dr. Swaminathan said that similar was the demand at Alagappa Government Arts College at Karaikudi where already 4,300 application forms were sold this year as compared to the total figure of 4,365 forms last year.

With another week to go for completing the applications’ process, department authorities are expecting the numbers to soar high even further.
