Tirunelveli: Manonmaniam Sundaranar University will offer M.Sc. and M.Tech. programmes in Nano Biotechnology through its Centre for Marine Sciences and Technology at Rajakkalmangalam in Kanyakumari district from the coming academic year.

The university administration, at its syndicate committee meeting held on Monday evening, has decided to approach former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to join its visiting faculty.

The committee also proposed to get a financial assistance of Rs. 20 crore from the Union Government to establish an International Centre for Nano Biotechnology with world-class infrastructure facilities on the CMST premises, already offering M.Sc. Marine Biot.

“We expect this assistance to reach us within six months so that we can provide CMST with superior facilities which will attract the best brains across the globe in the emerging field,” Vice-Chancellor R.T. Sabapathy Mohan told reporters here on Tuesday.

Moreover, the CMST, with the objective of making the youths from coastal hamlets in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts employable, will offer certificate and diploma courses with the duration of six months and one year and conduct training programmes on seaweed cultivation, seafood handling, processing and marketing.

Master of Physical Education would be another attractive course to be offered by the MSU while its satellite centre would offer a unique programme, Certificate Course in Scuba Diving.

The MSU Constituent College at Sattankulam will offer M.Sc. Mathematics and M.Com. from this academic year onwards.

“All these new courses will be offered from academic year 2008–2009 onwards,” Dr. Mohan informed.

On augmenting the infrastructure facilities of MSU, he said construction of a new spacious administrative building with 40,000 square feet at a cost of Rs. 4 crore, gents’ hostel on an outlay of Rs. 1 crore, both on the Abhishekapatti premises, a city centre for DD and CE at the cost of Rs. 3 crore, sports complex on an outlay of Rs. 3 crore, official residences for the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar, costing about Rs. 75 lakh, all on the land acquired for the MSU on the Seevalaperi Road, would start before August this year.
