Manonmaniam varsity to offer new courses
Tirunelveli: Manonmaniam Sundaranar University will offer M.Sc.
and M.Tech. programmes in Nano Biotechnology through its Centre
for Marine Sciences and Technology at Rajakkalmangalam in Kanyakumari
district from the coming academic year.
The university administration, at its syndicate committee meeting
held on Monday evening, has decided to approach former president
A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to join its visiting faculty.
The committee also proposed to get a financial assistance of
Rs. 20 crore from the Union Government to establish an International
Centre for Nano Biotechnology with world-class infrastructure
facilities on the CMST premises, already offering M.Sc. Marine
Biot.
“We expect this assistance to reach us within six months
so that we can provide CMST with superior facilities which will
attract the best brains across the globe in the emerging field,”
Vice-Chancellor R.T. Sabapathy Mohan told reporters here on
Tuesday.
For coastal youths
Moreover, the CMST, with the objective of making the youths
from coastal hamlets in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts
employable, will offer certificate and diploma courses with
the duration of six months and one year and conduct training
programmes on seaweed cultivation, seafood handling, processing
and marketing.
Master of Physical Education would be another attractive course
to be offered by the MSU while its satellite centre would offer
a unique programme, Certificate Course in Scuba Diving.
The MSU Constituent College at Sattankulam will offer M.Sc.
Mathematics and M.Com. from this academic year onwards.
Through the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education,
the MSU would start offering new programmes including three
undergraduate courses (B.A. Political science, B.A. Public Administration
and B.Sc. Hotel Management & Catering Science), three post-graduate
programmes having duration of 2 years (M.A. Mass Communication
& Journalism, M.A. Tourism Management, M.A. Dravidian Studies),
six diploma courses (duration one year), eight diploma courses
in Master of Painting Works, six diploma courses in Master of
Terracotta & Sculptures and eleven certificate courses and
the much-awaited B.Ed. course, in which 500 candidates would
be enrolled.
“All these new courses will be offered from academic year
2008–2009 onwards,” Dr. Mohan informed.
On augmenting the infrastructure facilities of MSU, he said
construction of a new spacious administrative building with
40,000 square feet at a cost of Rs. 4 crore, gents’ hostel
on an outlay of Rs. 1 crore, both on the Abhishekapatti premises,
a city centre for DD and CE at the cost of Rs. 3 crore, sports
complex on an outlay of Rs. 3 crore, official residences for
the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar, costing about Rs. 75
lakh, all on the land acquired for the MSU on the Seevalaperi
Road, would start before August this year.
