NIT-T plans tie-up with NUS
The National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NIT-T) is exploring
the possibility of a tie-up with National University of Singapore
(NUS) to facilitate aspiring engineering students to earn a
postgraduation degree or Ph.D with global exposure.
NUS has already entered into collaborations with the IIT-Madras
and IIT-Bombay whereby candidates admitted to the PG degree
and Ph.D through the conventional procedure in the top-ranking
Indian institutions get opportunities to do course work for
a year at NUS.
Alongside qualifying themselves for the degrees awarded by IIT,
chosen candidates can have global exposure through access to
state-of-the-art educational facilities such as smart class
room, integrated virtual learning environment, web labs, conventional
CAD lab facilities and specialised library support at the NUS.
The added advantage is the stipend that the candidates would
be entitled to at NUS that would obviate the need for educational
aid.
The need for earning while learning by doing odd jobs, as is
the usual practice of students undertaking programmes in international
universities, does not arise, according to S. Raghavan, Senior
Faculty, NIT-T. Also, there is no need for candidates to appear
for examinations like GRE or TOEFL.
Courses open under this scheme are M.Tech., M.S. and Ph.D.
There is also a scheme for faculty members to carry out collaborative
research, especially in the fields of nanotechnology and biomedical
engineering that require costly equipment.
A synergy between the theoretical strengths of Indian faculty
and technical infrastructure at the NUS could be established.
Prof. Choudry of NUS was at NIT-T last week to explain to prospective
students and research scholars the facilities available at his
institution.
He advised the prospective candidates to make informed decisions
for career advancement. NIT-T Director M. Chidambaram expressed
eagerness to toe the line of the IITs.
