1,200 more engineering seats likely

Chennai : About 1,200 more seats are likely to be on offer at new government engineering colleges in the State in the coming academic year, according to Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy.

Five new government engineering colleges are likely to be established this year, he told reporters in Chennai on Wednesday.

This would be in addition to the six existing government engineering colleges.

The Minister kicked off the engineering admission process, with the announcement that application forms will be sold at various places from May 10 to 26. The deadline for receipt of completed forms at Anna University, Chennai, is 5:30 p.m. on May 26.

These are the forms for constituent colleges of all four Anna Universities, all government and government-aided engineering colleges and the government quota seats at self-financing engineering colleges. The forms will be available on all four Anna University campuses as well as at a number of government and aided engineering colleges and polytechnics and government arts and science colleges. The forms can also be posted from Anna University, Chennai, or downloaded from the Internet.

Each form costs Rs. 500, though candidates of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes can buy them at Rs. 250 apiece. Counselling will take place at Anna University, Chennai. The candidate and one accompanying person travelling to the counselling venue can avail themselves of a 50 per cent concession in bus fare.

The Minister promised that students who completed vocational courses would benefit from an increased quota in engineering colleges this year. One hundred seats in government and aided institutions and 4 per cent of the seats in self-financing institutions would be reserved for them.
