Common University Act awaits the approval of Assembly

MADURAI: The final draft of the Common University Act, applicable to all universities in the State, is ready and will be placed before the Assembly for approval. It will come into effect from academic year 2008-09.

A. Ramasamy, Vice-Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, told The Hindu here on Sunday that several recommendations made by a committee of experts had been incorporated in the Act to bring about uniformity in administrative functioning of all universities.

“We have finalised the Act and various differences in statutes of varsities will go away. However, the academic freedom of each university will not get affected or diluted,” he said. Besides Dr. Ramasamy, other members on the committee were, the Secretary for Higher Education, Law Secretary, Director of Collegiate Education, Director of Technical Education and Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Open University.

He said certain procedural formalities would be completed in the next few days. The Law Department had already given the go-ahead for the Act.

He indicated that the Registrar of a university would become a Syndicate member of that varsity under the Act. The differences in constituting Syndicate, Senate, Academic Council and Vice-Chancellor Search Committee had been addressed.
