Common University Act awaits the approval of Assembly
MADURAI: The final draft of the Common University Act, applicable
to all universities in the State, is ready and will be placed
before the Assembly for approval. It will come into effect from
academic year 2008-09.
A. Ramasamy, Vice-Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher
Education, told The Hindu here on Sunday that several recommendations
made by a committee of experts had been incorporated in the
Act to bring about uniformity in administrative functioning
of all universities.
“We have finalised the Act and various differences in
statutes of varsities will go away. However, the academic freedom
of each university will not get affected or diluted,”
he said. Besides Dr. Ramasamy, other members on the committee
were, the Secretary for Higher Education, Law Secretary, Director
of Collegiate Education, Director of Technical Education and
Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Open University.
He said certain procedural formalities would be completed in
the next few days. The Law Department had already given the
go-ahead for the Act.
He indicated that the Registrar of a university would become
a Syndicate member of that varsity under the Act. The differences
in constituting Syndicate, Senate, Academic Council and Vice-Chancellor
Search Committee had been addressed.
