Bharathiar University to set up Confucius Institute

MoU signed between BU and Huaihua University, China

NEW BEGINNING: G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University (left) exchanging an MoU with Xia li fa, Chancellor and President of Huaihua University, China (right), in China recently.

COIMBATORE: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed recently between the Bharathiar University and the Huaihua University, China, for founding the Bharathiar University Confucius Institute at the university premises in Coimbatore.

Indian heritage:
This is in pursuance of the memorandum of agreement (MoA) between the two parties in November last to enable Chinese students take up degree courses in Linguistics and Computer Science at the Bharathiar University. At that time it was decided to set up a Chair to promote Indian heritage, culture and fine arts at the Huaihua University, while its counterpart would come up at Bharathiar University to promote Chinese heritage, culture and fine arts.

Accordingly, the courses for the Chinese students began their course in January.

The MoU that was signed by Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam and Chancellor and President of Huaihua University Xia li fa during the former’s visit to China would enable the establishment of the institute.

Philosophy:
“The Chinese have a strong belief that the 2,500-year-old philosophy of Confucius has made them excel in the field of education. That is why they have requested us to promote the institute to conduct research on Chinese culture, language and also conduct courses on Confucius,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.

Bharathiar University would apply to the headquarters of the Confucius Institute for founding the institute.

The headquarters would also provide the institute with all the relevant documents.
