Common syllabus for entrance exams mooted
- “There was no continuity from primary school to high school"
THANJAVUR: Entrance examinations to professional courses should
be held based on a common syllabus throughout India, said the
Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University M. Ponnavaikko here
on Monday.
Speaking at the valedictory of the national seminar on testing
and evaluation organised by the National Testing Service, India,
at Tamil University here, Dr. Ponnavaikko said that students
speaking various languages take the entrance examinations.
Imbalances
If there is a common syllabus, it will remove imbalances.
This holds good for all the competitive examinations and the
National Testing Scheme India should aim at this, Dr. Ponnavaikko
he said.
He said that there was no continuity from primary school to
high school.
The syllabi are completely different and hence a student was
not able to learn a subject in its entirety.
In foreign countries there is no language problem as one language
is followed.
In India many languages are spoken and hence imbalances among
the languages should be removed first.
This national seminar will help in that direction. As a follow
up many such conferences should beheld periodically and small
conferences at the regional and local level should also be held,
he added.
The Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University, C. Subramaniam, the Director
of the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi (NIT-T), M.
Chidambaram, and Head, National Testing Service India, Pon Subbiah,
also spoken.
