Tamil Nadu, 5 other States to get IIMs
NEW DELHI: Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab will each
get an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) while Tamil Nadu,
Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and
Haryana will each have an Indian Institute of Management (IIM).
This was announced by Union Human Resource Development (HRD)
Minister Arjun Singh on Friday, ending the uncertainty over
the location. This has been a rather contentious issue ever
since the government announced its intent to set up eight IITs
and seven IIMs during the XI Plan period.
While the Ministry earlier announced that four of the eight
proposed IITs would be located in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan,
Bihar and Himachal Pradesh, and one IIM was coming up in Shillong,
the location of the remaining institutions was put on hold in
view of the claims made by almost all State governments.
Earlier, the PMO asked the HRD Ministry to put on hold decision
on their location. Releasing the list, Mr. Singh said the Prime
Minister had since approved the proposals.
Also, the Institute of Technology at Banaras Hindu University
will be converted into an IIT .
