Periyar University plans centres of excellence
To give more thrust to research activities

SALEM: Periyar University has planned to establish centres of excellence to give more thrust to research and development activities in this part of the State.

Vice-Chancellor M. Thangaraju has said that the university is encouraging its departments to start centres of excellence to accelerate research in specialized areas.

The proposal submitted for starting one such Centre for Energy Studies and Research is expected to be cleared shortly.

This centre will take up research on energy conservation, bio-energy resources and solar energy with the financial support of funding agencies such as the Ministry of Environment and Forest, and Department of Science and Technology.

The university will also start a Centre for Women Studies.

A proposal in this regard has already been submitted and the varsity is awaiting approval by the University Grants Commission.

Meanwhile, the Standing Committee on Academic Affairs of the university, which met recently, has approved the proposal of Geology Department to start five-year integrated M.Sc. course in Earth Science.

The committee has also approved the syllabus for various new job-oriented courses offered through the Periyar Institute of Distance Education.

The university has also decided to start certificate and diploma courses on various subjects for the benefit of students from economically weaker sections who have completed Standard X/Plus II.

The boards of studies for diploma and certificate courses are finalising the syllabi for these courses.

The Vice-Chancellor said that these certificate and diploma courses would help students to become entrepreneurs and enable them to set up small units.

The university also has plans to start new courses on Herbal Science and Yoga in the next academic year.
