Enhance quality of faculties: VC

Lays stress on closer interaction between teachers, students

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Vice Chancellor, Anna University, Tiruchi, V.Ramachandran has urged the managements of engineering colleges to take concrete steps to enhance the quality of the faculties so as to produce quality students with strong foundation of the core subjects of their disciplines, group working, soft skills and communication skills.

Delivering the sixth graduation day address at the Syed Ammal Engineering College near here on Saturday, he said that the quality of education had to be given utmost importance. The system of education, evaluation and accreditation had to be of internationally acceptable level.

“It is hard to find quality teachers but we are having qualified teachers. The technical institutions are in the hands of yet-to-learn teachers and saturated level teachers. Some teachers are below 30 years and some are above 60 years. A very few teachers are creating themselves an opportunity on their own to learn and update their knowledge in cutting edge and fast growing technologies,” he added.

Mr. Ramachandran said the quality in professional education demanded closer interactions between the faculty and the students and amongst the students themselves.

Teachers and students should spend more time together in the class rooms, library, laboratory, seminars, group discussions and others. They should not be encouraged to use sub-standard books to pass in the examinations.

Innovative ideas
The students, who had innovative ideas and thinking skills, could only stand in their position in this competitive world.

Skill development would necessitate reorientation of our education. In the era of specialisation and modern science, it was necessary to prepare curriculum in such a way to propel the growth process.

Graduates should not necessarily be job-seekers, but be job providers as well.

The Vice Chancellor said the concentration must be focused on design, innovation and research.

Former Vice Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University M. Salihu disbursed gold medals and certificates to meritorious students.

Dr. Babu Abdullah, Chelladurai Abdullah and Chinnadurai Abdullah of Syed Ammal College took part.
