50 B. Ed. colleges under scanner

To check compliance of appointment norms
  • A fresh set of guidelines have been prepared for self-financing colleges
  • Governing council must have a university representative
MADURAI: All the 50 self-financing B. Ed. colleges under Madurai Kamaraj University jurisdiction have been put under scanner to check the compliance of norms in appointment of principals and lecturers.

The university has prepared a fresh set of guidelines for these colleges on Thursday. It has decided to undertake surprise checks to verify the qualification of teachers to ensure that norms of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) are followed.

David Amirtharajan, Dean (College Development Council), said that it had been made mandatory that every college should have a university representative on its governing council for getting further affiliation.

All the B. Ed. colleges must send particulars of staff members to the university and get its permission while making appointments.

“Some new colleges still do not have university representatives on their management committees. This has to be corrected. Also appointment of principals/teachers should be done by duly constituted selection committees only.”

On qualified staff
The issue of some B. Ed. colleges not having qualified staff was raised by S. Thangasamy, Principal, Lakshmi College of Education, Gandhigram, at the Academic Council meeting on Wednesday.

While asking for staff particulars from all colleges, the new guidelines also insist that every B. Ed. college must have two governing body or management committee meetings in an academic year and “the minutes sent to the university.”

“There should be stern action against erring colleges. Because, teachers who prepare students for the country should be qualified first,” Dr. Thangasamy said and questioned “how can it be done without qualified teachers?”

According to the Dean, of the total 53 B. Ed. colleges under the university’s jurisdiction, only three were aided and the remaining under self-financing category.
