CHENNAI: Union Science and Technology Secretary T. Ramasami
on Tuesday urged young Indian engineers to work for a new world
order that is truly flat without economic inequities.
Participating in the Graduation Day function at Anna University,
he said in the modern world, innovations had caused more inequities
than even the differences in the ability to access technologies
did. If an innovation had no inclusive growth as its purpose,
it would be socially incomplete. Hence, the young engineers
should seek a greater social purpose for their innovations.
Stating that the world was focussed on the pride of innovation
and making profits out of it, he called on Indian engineers
to change the priorities of the world from pride to purpose.
“What can be more gratifying than to make the benefits
of an innovation reach the excluded and embrace the global good?”
According to him, the need of the hour was to adapt to the changing
circumstances. Those who could control knowledge and adapt to
new situations commanded higher access to power and larger resources,
while the rest were left out of competition. Therefore, access
to technologies and connectivity made all the difference.
While calling upon engineers of Indian origin to assume special
positions in the knowledge economy, he said the ability to innovate
would help the youth to brave the new world order.
Anna University Registrar K. Jayaraman said the Department of
Science and Technology had released Rs.4 crore towards introduction
of M.Tech in nanotechnology and for establishment of nanotechnology
centre. The university has proposed to commence programmes in
M.Tech nanotechnology, B.E. biomedical engineering and M.Tech
in food technology from the next academic year.
During the current year, a new placement model for core engineering
industries was introduced by declaring Dream Company Offer Status
with pay packages of Rs.4 lakh to 12 lakh per annum.
About 253 students have joined the core industries as against
183 in the previous year.
As many as 119 students drawn from various disciplines were
given medals and mementos.
