‘Cater to needs of job markets’
Overcome globalisation challenges: VC
- ‘Transform human resources in India into assets’
- Conventional courses must move to specialised areas
RASIPURAM: The higher education system in the country has to
absorb and accommodate changes to cater to the needs of job
markets and the evolving global economic order, Thiruvalluvar
University Vice-Chancellor L. Kannan has said.
Convocation
Addressing the young graduates at the convocation of Muthayammal
College of Arts and Science here on Saturday, the Vice-Chancellor
pointed out that the country needs a strong and vibrant higher
education system to overcome the challenges posed by the globalisation.
There was a strong feeling that the skills of graduates did
not match the needs and expectations of the industry.
The country should take initiatives to transform its human resources
into assets.
The most important perquisite to achieve this is the development
of more knowledge-powered and job-oriented courses, he said.
The conventional courses have to move to specialised and professional
areas of education and new changes should be introduced in the
syllabi which would enable the students to get jobs immediately,
he observed.
The education quality should be improved to the international
level, thus enabling the students to face the challenges in
the competitive world, he added.
Stressing that liberal funding was necessary for the development
of higher education sector, Mr. Kannan said that more efforts
should be made to provide access to higher education to as many
people as possible.
Only seven per cent of students enrolled in higher education
in the country.
This was in contrast to 11 per cent in Indonesia, 12 per cent
in Brazil, 19 per cent in Thailand, and 81 per cent in the United
States.
Universities
More universities and colleges should be established, he said.
