Varsity signs MoU with Bangalore-based company
Nagercoil: The Centre for Marine Science and Technology of Manonmaniam
Sundaranar University and the Xpression Biotek, Bangalore, have
signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for starting an industry–university
joint M.Sc. programme in Nanobiotechnology
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Cynthia Pandian, and
S.Kashturi Rengan, Director, Xpression Biotek exchanged the
signed MOU.
In her presidential address, the Vice-Chancellor pointed out
that the Centre for Marine Science and Technology (CMST) has
brought many laurels to the university, which was also reflected
in a recent meeting of vice-chancellors’ held in Chennai.
She said that the course on M.Sc. Nanobiotechnology was the
first of its kind in India.
Ms. Cynthia Pandian further noted that the university was also
offering specialised courses in Biotechnology such as M.Sc.
in Environmental Biotechnology and M.Sc in Marine Biotechnology.
The Vice-Chancellor said that in a few years the CMST could
become a Centre of Potential Excellence in Biotechnology.
A.P. Lipton, Head, CMST, in his inaugural address, listed the
various areas of study in Nanobiotechnology and opined that
drugs from marine organisms were an important area on which
researches should be focused.
He thanked the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar and members of
the Syndicate for approving the industry-university joint M.Sc.
Programme.
S.G. Prakash Vincent, Co-ordinator Nanobiotechnology Programme,
CMST, and the member, Scientific Advisory Committee of Xpression
Biotek, explained the areas in which the students would be trained.
He also mentioned that the faculty members for this course would
be provided from the Xpression Biotek and officials from different
international biotechnology and institutes would be invited
to deliver guest lectures.
Direct interaction
This would facilitate students to directly interact with the
scientists from the industry and institutes. He pointed out
that along with the practical training in Xpression Biotek,
management training would also be given to select students.
The Registrar, P. Chellathurai, detailed the two different MoUs
signed in CMST with international agencies for operating projects
in CMST.
Mr. Mohan Kumar, CEO, Xpression Biotek, opined that the future
was Nanotechnology and Xpression Biotek was happy in joining
hands with the CMST, of MS University for introducing a joint
M.Sc. programme. Xpression Biotekwas having its research and
development wing at Marthandam in Kanyakumari district.
