Six Chennai colleges to form first cluster in State
The concept is based on a Western model
MADURAI: Six colleges in Chennai will form the first cluster
in the State as part of the Government’s move to popularise
cluster college concept based on a western model.
At a meeting of Vice-Chancellors of all universities and higher
education officials held in Chennai on Tuesday, the Minister
for Higher Education, K. Ponmudy, suggested that the cluster
model be expedited to share infrastructure and human resources,
official sources told The Hindu here on Thursday.
The six Government arts and science colleges under the first
cluster are Queen Mary’s College, Presidency College,
Government Arts College, Bharathi Government Women’s College,
Dr. Ambedkar Government College of Arts and Science and Quaid-e-Milleth
Government College for Women.
The cluster of colleges shall progressively share existing facilities
in partnering colleges and undertake common ventures in teaching/learning,
research and extension activities for mutual development. V.
Swaminathan, Joint Director of Collegiate Education, who attended
the meeting, said by coming together under one cluster the colleges
could effectively share resources and strengths for larger benefit
of students. “A cluster can have all types of colleges,
be it Government, aided or self-financing colleges,” he
said and added that there would be a ‘lead college’
for one single cluster. Giving more information about the Government’s
proposal, A. Ramasamy, Vice-Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Council
for Higher Education, said a cluster could have up to 10 colleges
and institutions and enter into a memorandum of understanding
(MoU) in this regard.
In the Madurai Kamaraj University region, the Joint Director
plans to convene a joint meeting of university officials and
college Principals to discuss creation of clusters.
