Do not convert GCT into a constituent college
Staff, students criticise Government’s decision
COIMBATORE: The staff and students of the Government College
of Technology (GCT) are protesting against the Government’s
decision to transfer it to Anna University, Coimbatore, as a
constituent college.
According to the staff, the college has received a proposal
from the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE) asking it
to hand over land and other property to Anna University, Coimbatore.
Based on the proposal that will be sent, the State Government
will pass an order wherein the college will be made a constituent
of the university, they say.
The staff and students are united in showing their protest against
such a move. A large section of them staged a sit-in on the
campus on Monday. This is the only Government engineering college
in this area. Why should it be made a constituent college? they
ask.
If the Vice-Chancellor wants land, he should pursue it with
Bharathiar University where it has been allotted some, they
say.
A first year student says that her contemporaries are against
the move because they are sure that there will be a considerable
increase in the fee structure. Most of the students are worried
about the fee.
Other than that, their chances at getting placements will reduce
when they are grouped along with other students of the university.
Now, they have a separate identity as an autonomous body, which
is working well, she says.
Principal of GCT S. Annadurai agrees that the students are showing
their displeasure. “They are afraid that they will be
losing some benefits if the transfer is done. We are yet to
receive any authentic information regarding the transfer. But,
when such an order comes from the Government, it should be obeyed,”
he asserts.
VC clarifies
Vice-Chancellor R. Radhakrishnan sees the move of the DOTE as
a mere procedure.
“This had to happen; only it is happening after a year.
This has already happened in Chennai and Tiruchirapalli. The
Coimbatore and Tirunelveli campuses have got the notification
only now. It will definitely be a good move,” he says.
University sources feel that it will be a welcome change for
the GCT students. “With the transfer, they will be able
to get better infrastructure and facilities.”
The protesting group has sent a fax on Tuesday to Chief Minister
M. Karunanidhi, requesting him not to change the status of GCT
to a constituent college.
