Global meet on management starts
TIRUCHI: Focussing on all functional areas of management, Atheneum
’08, an International Conference on Management Research
hosted by the Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), got
off to a start on Friday with the assurance of bridging theory
and practice.
The second edition of the conference, organised by the Institute’s
Centre for Contemporary Management Research, has witnessed an
overwhelming response.
Of the 120 papers submitted from India and 10 others including
France, Iran, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Pakistan and Mauritius, BIM
has chosen 58 papers on diverse topics like talent management,
brand management, leadership and innovation, financial inclusion,
supply chain management, entrepreneurship, family management
and information technology, for presentation. Of these, 21 papers
will be selected for publication as a book.
In his special address read out by the Executive Director –
HR of National Thermal Power Corporation, G.K. Agarwal, the
Corporation’s Chairman and Managing Director T. Sankaralingam
emphasised on ‘Think Global – Act Local’ approach
as one of the major management strategies in today’s business
world.
Organisational mindset
Companies need a large pool of executives who view business
opportunities from a global perspective.
A complete regeneration of the organisational mindset is a precedent
for achieving success in the context of cataclysmic transformation.
By virtue of the biggest competitive advantage of the largest
pool of working population with high quality skills, India,
he said, is poised to provide quality and quantity of expert
manpower to advanced countries.
The ability of Indians to create value through their mental
endowment or intellectual capital is the key driver of India’s
growing stature.
Acquisition, dissemination and application of knowledge are
prime drivers of today’s society, he said, insisting on
continuous learning in a scenario where knowledge and its application
are becoming obsolete at a fast pace.
Dr. Sankaralingam advocated socially relevant innovation leading
to leveraging of the natural resources and spreading of the
benefit to the rest of the world, and advised academic institutions
to interact closely with business and industry.
Tirukkural insights
Inaugurating the conference, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan
University M. Ponnavaikko spoke of the advantages inherent in
evolving mathematical models for various management aspects.
He referred to the wealth of management insights in Tirukkural,
and suggested incorporation of a paper on Management Principles
of Tiruvalluvar into the MBA curriculum. Managers should adapt
to the societies needs by learning to know (seeking knowledge),
to do (practising what is learnt), to live together (working
as team) and to be (proving mettle with self-confidence and
determination).
Focus on soft skills
BIM Director M. Sankaran said the uniqueness of the Institute
was in its emphasis on value-based education and focus on soft
skills. Conference chairman P. David Jawahar said the highlights
of the conference were the plenary sessions on ‘Women
in Management’ and ‘Creating an Entrepreneurial
Spirit: Challenges and Opportunities’.
