‘Research in education is vital’
International conference on Educational Research concludes
in Salem
- ‘We are doing research for the sake
of research and not contributing anything significant’
- There is a global demand for quality research
in different areas of education
SALEM: A cognitive and mental restructuring is needed for good
and meaningful research in the field of education, National
Psychological Corporation Director Mahesh Bhargava has said.
If we have concluded something meaningfully out of our research,
it is kept closed with the report and no suggestions are incorporated
in the system of education, Mr. Bhargava pointed out in his
keynote address at the international conference on ‘Educational
Research in the Era of Globalisation’, organised by the
Department of Education, Periyar University.
The two-day conference concluded on Wednesday.
Some of the areas in education that required more research work
included analysing the relevance of philosophical views and
thinking of educationists in the present context, evaluation
of course content as per needs of the society, learning and
developing language skills, preparation of new learning materials,
tools and evaluating validity of existing measures, promotion
of short term research programmes, revamping of elementary teacher
education and promotion of early childhood education, he said.
He said that there is a global demand for quality research in
real problem perspectives in different areas of education, focussing
on policy planning, policy development and effective implementation
of programmes.
Though there are good number of research innovations carried
out in different parts of the country to improve the quality
and quantity of educational programmes and providing access
to education to the un-reached, disadvantaged and physically
challenged, there was still a great dearth of research in very
important and needed areas of education.
The quality of educational research in the country is very poor
because neither scholars nor guides take pains to gather proper
knowledge of research methodology, applications of statistical
techniques and uses of research tools.
We are doing research for the sake of research and not contributing
anything significant.
It is very disappointing to note that modern educational research
at any level is very much stereotyped.
Investigation
Many research projects are confined to investigations of relationships
among various variables or to study the difference between two
or more groups of certain variables or making a survey report,
without thinking logically and rationally.
As a result, these efforts go waste and are limited only to
obtain a degree or fulfilment of a project, he said.
