TIRUCHI: Anna University – Tiruchi, would increase the number of its undergraduate programmes to nine by offering B.E. in Civil and Mechanical from the next academic year.

The university currently offers UG programmes in automobile, EEE, ECE, CSE, IT, petrochemical and biotechnology. By 2009, the university will have full-fledged laboratories for the new programmes. With support from the Airports Authority of India, the university would introduce executive programmes of six-month duration in ‘Airport Management’ and ‘Construction Engineering and Management,’ the Vice-Chancellor V. Ramachandran told reporters on Monday.

The 90,000-square feet Academic Block coming up at a cost of Rs.8 crore would be ready for occupation by the beginning of March next year, he said, informing that the three-storeyed block would encompass 18 classrooms, 18 laboratories and libraries measuring 10,000 square feet on two floors. Construction of the two hostels with 70 rooms each would be over by this month-end.

The Higher Education Secretary K. Ganesan who visited the university on Sunday to take stock of the administrative and academic activities was happy with the progress, the Vice-Chancellor added.

By extending the Faculty Development Programme (FDP) for teachers of affiliated Engineering Colleges to faculty of polytechnics in the State, the university was creating adequacy of quality teachers, he said. On the lines of Finishing School, the university was contemplating conduct of ‘induction programmes’ whereby industries would provide funds to train students to become job-ready as per their specific individual requirements.
