TANUVAS to tie up with Ohio State University
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University
(TANUVAS) plans to sign a memorandum of understanding with Ohio
State University in animal and poultry production, Animal Husbandry
Minister Geetha Jeevan said on Saturday.
Inaugurating a national workshop on ‘Digital inclusion
on development in rural India with an emphasis on livestock
and poultry sector,’ sponsored by the National Informatics
Centre at Madras Veterinary College, she recalled that an agreement
was signed between TANUVAS and Virginia Tech University in June
this year for capacity building in infectious diseases and biotechnology.
The Government would take steps to take the latest information
technology to livestock and poultry farmers so as to increase
production and productivity.
The Minister released a compendium.
Neglected sector
P. Thangaraju, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS, who presided, said
five per cent of the country’s labour force was employed
in the livestock and poultry sector. Livestock’s contribution
to the agricultural GDP had grown significantly, from less than
15 per cent four decades ago to 30 per cent now. The value of
livestock output went up by six per cent a year. But the sector
was the most neglected. It should be given priority to create
livelihood in rural areas. The country needed to produce more
to meet the growing demand for livestock products.
