Centre of Excellence in biofuels at TNAU
50 seed sources of jatropha identified
- It has been proposed to bring 1,00,000 hectares under jatropha cultivation
COIMBATORE: Keeping in line with the developments in the biofuel
sector, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has been conducting
intensive research in different tree borne oilseed species,
with particular reference to jatropha since 1992.
Scheme
According to a TNAU release, the Indian Council of Agricultural
Research has funded a scheme titled “Improvement and Popularisation
of Biofuels” for a period of five years. Under the scheme,
TNAU has set up a Centre of Excellence in biofuels with biofuel
testing laboratory.
Facilities
The centre that was inaugurated by Agriculture Minister Veerapandi
S. Arumugam on Tuesday has a lyophilisation unit, water management
system, computerised oil rig, High Performance Liquid Chromatography,
etc.
The centre is engaged in co-ordinating and implementing the
Tamil Nadu Government Programme “Promotion of Cultivation
of Jatropha in Tamil Nadu” wherein it has been proposed
to bring 1,00,000 hectares under jatropha cultivation.
It is also co-ordinating with the Department of Agriculture
and 11 biofuel companies, identified by the Government, pertaining
to production of 332 lakh jatropha seedlings per annum.
The university has identified 50 seed sources of jatropha from
different places of the State as well as the country for various
research purposes.
