Bharathiar University signs pact with Chinese University
First batch of Chinese students to arrive in December
COIMBATORE: A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between Bharathiar
University and Huaihua University, China, here on Thursday,
to facilitate Chinese students to pursue higher education at
Bharathiar University.
A five-member team from the Huaihua University visited Bharathiar
University to finalise details regarding Chinese students pursuing
courses in English, Linguistics and Computer Science.
The team was headed by Xia li fa, Chancellor and president,
Huaihua University.
The others included Tan Wei Ping, vice-president, Deng Shi Song,
Dean of Administration, Xiaoyue, Staff – Foreign Affairs
Office and G. Somasundaram, Associate Professor of English.
They spent three days from November 13 checking various infrastructure.
The university will, as a special case, offer degree courses
in English and Computer Science to Chinese students.
The first batch will have 100 students. They will come to India
under the ‘twinning programme’ (two year study in
China and the third year to be completed in India).
The agreement was signed between Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor
G. Thiruvasagam and Chancellor of Huaihua University Xia li
fa.
“Information Technology is coming up in a big way in China.
Everyone wants to learn English. There are not many there to
teach. They welcome such invitations to study in universities
located outside their country. This university has decided to
collaborate with us”, Dr. Thiruvasagam said. The first
batch of Chinese students would arrive in December and classes
would begin in March 2008. The curriculum would be updated and
made more useful to include communication skills and functional
English.
A separate hostel would be made ready to house them.
Chair
A Chair to promote Indian heritage, culture and fine arts would
be set up at the Huaihua University, while its counterpart would
be set up at Bharathiar University to promote Chinese heritage,
culture and fine arts.
