M.Ch. course in gastroenterology

At Madurai Medical College soon

MADURAI: The Department of Gastroenterology and Proctology, Government Rajaji Hospital, had initiated work to start Master of Chirurgy (M.Ch.) degree course in gastroenterology in Madurai Medical College, said Professor and Head of the department, R. Muthukrishnan

The Medical Council of India (MCI) had already inspected infrastructure facilities at the hospital and suggested a few rectifications. Once all the suggestions were met, the MCI would be invited for review inspection for clearance, he said.

If Madurai Medical College got the clearance, it would be the third Government college in the State to get M.Ch. in this speciality, after Madras Medical College and Stanley Medical College he added.

The department had been well equipped with video endoscopy, laparoscopy equipment and harmonic scalpel. The video endoscopy equipment facilitated detection of early malignancy of stomach and cholorectum while the harmonic scalpel was of tremendous use in minimising blood loss during surgical procedures on liver and pancreas, Dr. Muthukrishnan said.

With the available infrastructure, the department could perform surgeries on liver, carcinoma rectum, oesophagus and stomach. On an average, the department treated 4,000 patients every year with inpatient capacity of 30 beds.

The immediate requirement for the department was a C-arm with image intensifier for the Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatogram to diagnose and perform key procedures on pancreas and liver in advanced malignancy through stent, he said and added that a proposal for purchase of equipment worth Rs.35 lakh had been sent to the Government for approval.

The department had also sent a proposal for construction of a separate block at a cost of Rs.63 lakh, he said.
