No additional counselling for polytechnic admissions
Madurai: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has refused
to direct the Higher Education Department to conduct an additional
counselling session for admission to polytechnics to accommodate
students who cleared the Plus-Two in supplementary examinations.
“No discrimination”
Dismissing a writ petition filed by a student, Justice K. Chandru
said: “It is not for this court to determine as to what
should be the academic programme for each year. The learned
counsel’s submission that thousands of students who had
passed the supplementary examination were available for joining
the diploma courses through lateral entry, and the seats, if
not filled, will result in wastage, cannot be a ground for the
court to intervene.”
On the petitioner’s contention that additional counselling
sessions were being conducted for admission into bachelor of
engineering courses, the judge said: “The petitioner’s
comparison with the auxiliary counselling done for B.E. admission
programme is based on the Government’s policy and if the
same is not extended to polytechnic diploma courses it cannot
be called discrimination.”
He said the petitioner could have joined the first year of the
diploma course immediately after completing Standard X.
Instead, the petitioner had preferred to write the higher secondary
examination and failed in his first attempt. At this juncture,
he could not seek a direction to conduct additional counselling
for joining the second year of the diploma course through lateral
entry, the judge added.
