Varsity asked to furnish details on admission under various quotas
Chennai: The Madras High Court has asked the Anna University
not to fill up categories such as “Government quota,”
“Governor’s quota,” and “Vice-Chancellor’s
quota” in its three constituent colleges until further
orders.
Passing interim orders on a public interest litigation petition
questioning these quotas, which are “unknown to law,”
the First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice
P. Jyothimani rapped the Registrar of the University for having
filed an affidavit devoid of any particulars in the matter.
“The affidavit filed by the Registrar of the Anna University
is totally unsatisfactory and completely devoid of any particulars,”
they observed, and directed the official to file an affidavit
furnishing details about various quotas and how seats in each
of those quotas were filled up. The affidavit shall provide
details of the authority/entity empowered to fill up such quotas,
and the number of seats filled up under these quotas. It shall
be filed in a week, the Bench said and adjourned the matter
to September 5.
In his petition, S. Rajendran of Ramanathapuram district contended
that nearly 80 seats in the College of Engineering in Guindy,
and many such seats in two other constituent colleges of the
Anna University were allotted to ineligible candidates making
a “mockery of the centralised counselling and single window
system, besides the cut off marks.” Maintaining that these
quotas were unknown to law, the petitioner said illegal admissions
were made in 2005-06.
